Fortescue Metals Group, a leading global iron ore producer, has announced a groundbreaking partnership with Liebherr Mining, a renowned manufacturer of mining equipment, to develop a fully integrated Autonomous Haulage Solution (AHS) for zero-emission vehicles.
This collaboration is a significant step forward in Fortescue’s ambitious goal to achieve real zero terrestrial emissions (Scope 1 and 2) across its Australian iron ore operations by 2030. Fortescue, known for its pioneering efforts in autonomous haulage, has already completed one of the largest fleet conversions to autonomous operation in the industry.
Building on this expertise, Fortescue is now working alongside Liebherr to co-create a sophisticated AHS system tailored to the unique demands of the mining sector. The system will integrate a cutting-edge Fleet Management System (FMS) designed to optimize fleet utilization, maximize productivity, and ensure efficient consumption of fuel and energy.
Dino Otranto, Fortescue’s chief executive officer said, “Our deep expertise in autonomous haulage has enabled Fortescue and Liebherr to develop a Fleet Management System that uniquely targets efficiency and unlocks untapped capacity in our fleet. This critical technology puts our business in full control of our development priorities and roadmap.”
Furthermore, the partnership between Fortescue and Liebherr extends beyond the AHS system. In June 2022, the two companies announced their intention to build a zero-emissions haulage solution, leveraging Fortescue’s fuel cell, battery, and battery-electric technology, combined with Liebherr’s OEM experience.
“Liebherr has always prioritized market-led product development and we are privileged to be partnering with Fortescue to collectively develop and deploy this Autonomous Haulage Solution. Our collaborative efforts will be beneficial, not only for Fortescue, but for the entire mining industry,” said Oliver Weiss, Liebherr Mining’s EVP R&D, Engineering, and Production.
Conclusively, this latest partnership represents a significant step forward in the industry’s pursuit of sustainable, autonomous mining operations. By combining their expertise and resources, Fortescue and Liebherr are poised to redefine the future of mining and pave the way for a greener, more efficient, and more technologically advanced industry.
